Castel Hörtenberg has been watching over Bolzano for more than 500 years, intertwining noble and local history. A place suspended between past and present.

The castle's origins
In 1471, Leonhard Hiertmair turned his estate in Dodiciville, one of the city's oldest districts, into a stylish manor house. This far-sighted move led to him being elected mayor for four terms and, in 1584, he was granted an aristocratic title by the Hapsburg Emperor. This is how the castle’s history began, as a symbol of prestige and distinction, a silent witness to the passage of time.

The Giovanelli family
When the Hiertmair line died out the castle passed to the Giovanelli family. Barons Giovanelli von Hörtenberg zu Gerstburg looked after and added to the manor house in an enlightened spirit and their history and that of the South Tyrol interwove. The castle's rooms all reflect their discreet elegance and respect for local history.
1808-1809
the Tyrolean Wars
In the midst of the Tyrolean rebellion, Castel Hörtenberg acted as leader Andreas Hofer’s strategic refuge and headquarters. The Giovanellis were ardent supporters of the Tyrolean rebellion against French rule and the castle’s fate was closely interwoven with the events that forged the area's identity.
19th-21st centuries
Contemporary transformation
Passing from Giovanelli family hands into those of the von Fuchs barons, and then to the Podini family, Castel Hörtenberg evolved without losing its historic soul. Careful restoration work exalted its architecture and landscape, melding tradition and contemporary design. Today the castle is an exclusive haven of peace whose every detail speaks volumes of timeless history and style.
